Winter Preparation Guide

Successful overwintering starts with good fall preparation. Colonies that enter winter with low mite loads, strong populations, and adequate stores have the best survival rates.

Critical prep tasks in priority order:

  • Complete final mite treatment and verify efficacy (Grade B or better)
  • Assess food stores — supplement if below target weight
  • Confirm queen status (eggs or young larvae present)
  • Combine weak colonies with strong ones
  • Install mouse guards and entrance reducers
  • Set up moisture management (quilts, upper ventilation)

  • Food store targets by region:

  • Northern states: 80-90 lbs of honey or equivalent
  • Mid-latitude: 60-70 lbs
  • Southern states: 40-50 lbs

  • Moisture management:

Moisture kills more colonies than cold. Use moisture quilts, upper ventilation notches, or insulated inner covers. The goal is to let warm, moist air escape without creating drafts.

Timing: Complete all winterization before temperatures consistently drop below 50F.
